Welcome to 2021!
I am so very honored to be starting 2021 with you! Thank you for allowing us to go on this farm fresh flavor journey with you.
As we leave 2020 behind, and look forward to 2021, I wanted to share a few thoughts with you on our focus and vision moving forward. (TLDR at the end)
Mushrooms are obviously our flagship products - and right now, due to the rules by the wholesalers we sell our mushrooms to, we are not able to offer tours, or on farm pick up. In 2021, I plan to change that - how would you like to visit our farm? Take a tour of our growing rooms? Pick a mushroom right off the bed? Have a five course dinner in the pasture?
What I would like to do is buy, or rent the farm from my father-in-law, growing just for market and for our farm and chef partners. This will allow us to do tours, have on farm pick up, and host events on site! How awesome would that be??
Until that happens, we will be adding farmers markets to our schedule! You'll be able to find us at seven (YES... I said SEVEN!) farmers markets this year starting in May - Kennett Square, Chesapeake City, Bel Air, Havre de Grace, Downingtown, Malvern, and Newark. We'll be at each market every other week with the exception of Newark - we're happy to say we will be committing to every Sunday :)
There are a few markets and drop sites we are at for the rest of the winter and early spring: Kennett Square, Downingtown, and Malvern Farmers Markets, and drop sites in Bel Air, Havre de Grace, and Newark. For drop sites, pre order on our website for pick up.
We'll be hiring soon - so if you or someone you know may be interested in working with us, send me an email, so I can make sure you get all the information as soon as we finalize the roles.
Though fungi is fun, poultry is my passion! Last year we experimented with heritage breeds of chicken, along with some of the more conventional breeds, raising them on pasture with locally milled non-GMO feed (and boy, were they delicious!)
2021 will include whole heritage chicken (including our poussin!), whole conventional chicken, as well as parted chicken (hellooooo thighs, breasts, and drumsticks!), and turkeys.
Speaking of poultry... we would love to raise duck. Like, LOVE to... but our two USDA inspected processors are too busy with chickens to process ducks this year. This is only part of the problem in the local food chain right now - limited processing availability for local producers.
This is where we would like to come in!
Little Branch Butcher
We've talked before a bit about Little Branch Butcher - we will be establishing and building a private label (independent) poultry processing facility on our farm in Oxford. We will be able to serve our own needs (like duck and goose processing!), as well as the needs of other small farms in our area, and homesteaders who want to raise their own food.
Ideally we can get this happening by turkey time 2021, so, fingers crossed, and nose to the grindstone!
What do you think? What would you like in 2021? What are your goals? How can we help you achieve them?
I hope you had a fabulous new year's celebration, and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone in the upcoming months and throughout 2021 :)
Have a great day,
